            Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (called ACT)  helps people to live according to their most important values and goals without being continually sidetracked by the difficult thoughts, feelings and experiences in their lives.  This is made possible as people learn to become more aware of themselves as observers of the painful thoughts and feelings through acceptance and mindfulness techniques.  People learn to recognise those things in their lives that are able to be changed and develop the capacity to accepted what can not be changed.  It offers a way out of suffering by choosing to live a life based on what matters most. A useful self-help resource is Russ Harris' book called "The Happiness Trap" (The Happiness Trap)
Additional information is available on the official ACT website (/www.contextualpsychology.org/act_for_the_public  )
