            My Approach to Counselling

Every individual and every situation is different. My aim as a counsellor is to listen, and to focus on what clients want rather than relying on a single approach.

My theoretical approach is continually developing under the influences of my day-to-day contact with clients, their feedback, and my exposure to new ideas about counselling theory and practice.  I am committed to my own personal and professional development and regularly attend workshops and conferences to keep up to date with current approaches and ideas.

Narrative Therapy informs my basic approach to counselling,  but I also incorporate ideas from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These approaches offer opportunities to incorporate my early studies on the theory of behaviour change with respect for individual values, and provide an expression for my natural inclination towards creative illustrations and metaphor.

When appropriate I also draw on common counselling approaches such as Client-Centred, Interpersonal Therapy, IDT and CBT as well as my extensive knowledge of human development and psychology.
